Tehran has currently five operating water treatment plants as follows: - Jalaliyeh water treatment plant, which is the oldest in Iran. It is located in the southern east of the junction of Hejab and Fatemi streets. Established in 1955, the plant processes the water from Karaj river. The water is first collected in Bilaghan sediment station. There, it is screened and chlorinated and then sent to the plant through two steel pipes with the length of 40 kilometers and the diameter of 1000 millimeters. - As the biggest water treatment plant in Iran, Shahre Ziba plant, situated in the west of Tehran, has two parts which started in 1963 and 1970 respectively. The plant processes the water from Karaj River. The water is first collected in Bilaghan sediment station. There, it is screened and chlorinated and then sent to the plant through two concrete pipes with the length of 33 kilometers and the diameter of 2000 millimeters. - The third and fourth plants are situated in Shahid Abbaspoor Blvd., in the northeast of Tehran. The third plant was built in 1967 and the fourth plant in 1984, both having a capacity of 4 cubic meters per second. The plants process the water from Latyan dam through Telo tunnel with the length of 10 kilometers and diameter of 2.7 meters. There, the water is physically and chemically screened. These plants supply the water used in the east and parts of the center, north and south of the city.
- The fifth plant is situated in the northeast of Tehran. Starting in 2004, the plant processes the water from Lar dam. The water runs about 40 kilometers before it enters a tunnel with the diameter of 3600 millimeters and into the plant. There, the water is physically and chemically screened and is cleaned off all pollutants. The unprocessed water passes through a canal with the length of 38.26 meters, width of 9.65 meters and the depth of 6.48 meters. There, the water is first chlorinated and then its color, smell and taste are controlled.
